The story been told that Werther’s Original Caramel was first made in the small European town of Werther by Gustav Nebel. Originally he only used the finest ingredients. These included sugar, butter, fresh cream, salt and a large amount of patience and time. The irresistible candies were named Werther’s Original after the small town where they originated from.

The True Story

In reality, the true story is that they were first made in Werther, but they were produced by Nebel’s employer, the German company August Storck Kg. The product was originally called Werthers Echte. The product was sold nationally until the 1990’s.  At this point, the name was changed to Werther’s Original in order to be sold internationally. Now, Werther’s Original’s products are manufactured in Halle, Germany. Today, Werther’s Original is the Storck company’s most international brand because it is sold in over 100 countries across the world.

To conclude, the ingredients have slightly changed from their origin 100 years ago. Today, everyone including sugar lovers and sugar avoiders can enjoy these candies.
